In one of the modern villas on IJburg in Amsterdam, this white block staircase with a stainless steel balustrade stands out. The block staircase complements the industrial living style envisioned for the home. Although the clients wanted an industrial look, it still needed a touch of elegance.

For this reason, a white block staircase with a stainless steel balustrade was chosen. The white-painted block staircase adds sophistication to the home, while the stainless steel harmonizes beautifully with the untreated concrete walls.

Block staircases

The term “block staircase” has come up several times, but what exactly is a block staircase? A block staircase is a staircase in which the treads and risers are glued together at a 90-degree angle (mitered). The staircase is constructed with stringers and secured using steel pins anchored into the wall. For this reason, the steps are made extra thick.

Where standard treads are normally 4.10 cm thick, our block staircases are made with thicknesses ranging from 6.00 cm to 10.00 cm, depending on the client’s preference.

Multiple options

For a block staircase, it is important to have a load-bearing wall to securely anchor the steel pins mentioned above. If no load-bearing wall is available, a stringer can be installed in the wall and incorporated into the plasterwork. Another option is to use standard stringers. Our portfolio contains plenty of examples of both solutions.
