For a project in Veenendaal, we created two oak block staircases with glass finishes. The staircases were installed in a beautiful villa with ample space, allowing for ideal tread and riser dimensions, making these staircases fall into the category of a “gentle staircase.”

Design

As the title suggests (oak block staircases with glass), the staircases are made from 6.00 cm thick oak. Both the risers and treads are this thickness and are glued together at a 90-degree miter. This construction is what defines a “block staircase.”

For the balustrade, glass panels were chosen and attached to the staircase using stainless steel adapters. On the landing, the Q-Railing system was used, creating a seamless connection between the staircase and landing balustrades. The two elements align perfectly.

A matching oak handrail, treated with the same oil, was installed on the glass panels. Wooden handrails are an excellent choice, adding comfort while using the staircase. Other options, such as steel or no handrails, are also available. However, if grip and comfort are important, we always recommend wooden handrails. They feel warm to the touch and are pleasant to hold, making them ideal for families with young children.

Gentle staircases

The term has already been mentioned: the “gentle staircase,” a phrase we hear frequently. Clients often ask us to make the staircase as gentle as possible. However, the parameters of the staircase (tread depth and riser height) depend on the available space in the home.

For new construction, it is important to discuss with the architect early on to ensure enough space is allocated for the staircase. The dimensions required by building regulations provide only the minimum for a relatively safe staircase—they do not create a “gentle staircase.”

That’s why it’s beneficial to discuss your staircase preferences as early as possible. You can always contact us for advice without obligation; we are happy to assist.
