Our clients in Haarlem chose a modern block staircase with stringers. The stringers were set slightly inward to further emphasize the shape of the staircase.

Beneath the staircase, we also installed a custom cabinet, as well as the open shelving unit located next to the stairs. In addition, we provided other interior carpentry for the project (www.mio-home.nl).

Design

The block staircase is entirely made of beech wood and painted in a white RAL color. The balustrade combines strip steel and glass panels. The glass balustrade on the landing is mounted using the Q-Railing system, while the glass panels on the staircase itself are attached with adapters. All wooden elements are painted white, and all other components are powder-coated black, creating a bold and sleek appearance.

Construction

We are often asked, “Why do some block staircases have a beam under the steps while others do not?” The beam is the stringer, the load-bearing (structural) element of the staircase.

When a staircase must be mounted against a wall that is not load-bearing, stringers are used. Normally, block staircases are secured with steel pins anchored into a structural wall. If this is not possible, an underlying stringer is required.

In some cases, the use of stringers is a deliberate choice. Some clients prefer the aesthetic, while others find it more practical for installing a cabinet underneath.
