In Eindhoven, we are installing an oak block staircase with a glass balustrade for our clients. The clients’ wish was clear: modern and hotel-chic, so the choice was simple—a block staircase. Since the walls were not load-bearing, an underlying stringer construction was chosen. In this setup, the steps are not anchored into the wall with steel pins, as with a traditional block staircase, but are instead supported on the stringers.
Finish
For the steps and risers, oak wood was chosen, stained in a warm tone that complements the pigment family of the floor. This means the color is not identical, but the base pigment proportions come from the same color palette. The stringers are made of beech wood and painted in a black/anthracite color.
Balustrade
For the balustrade, glass panels were chosen, providing a modern and clean appearance. The glass panels are mounted using adapters and then covered with oak slats that follow the shape of the staircase. This creates the illusion that the steps and risers pass through the glass.
A narrow and minimalist steel handrail was also chosen for the glass panels, running along the entire landing. An additional handrail was installed on the wall, made from the same material as the one on the staircase.
