Simple yet elegant, the open oak staircase we installed in Wilegem keeps the space light and transparent. The staircase connects the utility room to the basement and is made from the same oak as the main staircase in the hallway. While a modern block staircase was chosen for the main stairs, the basement staircase was designed to be practical and simple.
Staircase design
This open staircase is made of natural oak and finished with a clear oil. The steps are laid on the stringers on both sides of the staircase. Visually, this makes the staircase appear wider, as the 4-centimeter-thick stringers are hidden beneath the steps. This design also complements the block staircase in the hallway, with no stringers visible along the walls.
For the balustrade, oak spindles and an oak handrail were chosen, finished with the same oil color.

Basic oak staircase
We are often asked what the difference is between a basic custom staircase and a standard (kit) staircase. Here are some key differences.
- The main difference lies in the staircase construction. Our custom staircases are self-supporting and do not require a central post around which the steps rotate. However, this means that our staircases must be anchored into the floor(s) and walls.
- The second point is the material of the staircase. Our basic staircases are made of oak or beech wood—both types of hardwood (beech is slightly softer and has fewer pores). Standard staircases are generally made of spruce or pine, which gives them a different color and appearance.
