For the project in Voorthuizen, the clients chose an open staircase with a spider balustrade. A staircase is considered “open” when it is constructed without risers.

Transparency and light

Open staircases are ideal for spaces where extra light and transparency are desired. To give the staircase a bold appearance, a design balustrade made of strip steel was chosen. This type of balustrade is handcrafted, making each one unique.

For comfortable support while using the staircase, an oak handrail was added to the balustrade. Especially in households with children, we recommend choosing wooden handrails. Wood is a warm material (steel feels cold to the touch) and more pleasant to hold, making the staircase slightly safer to use.

Supported steps

For the construction of the open staircase with spider balustrade, the steps were laid on top of the stringers. This has the advantage that the steps utilize the full width of the staircase. The stringers are standard 4 cm thick each, which results in steps that are 8 cm wider.
