A Special Project: Renovation of an Authentic Classic Staircase. In this monumental building in Utrecht, our construction and design team was involved in the complete renovation. Part of this project included restoring the classic staircase. The staircase in the home still retained its original balustrade and landing finish. Over the years, the steps had become significantly worn, so in consultation with the client, we renewed the treads and risers through re-covering.

The treads are made of solid oak and oiled in a natural transparent color. In the design, the staircase’s newel post was given a decorative element, custom-designed for the project and matching the style of the interior.

Restoring authentic staircases is a craft in itself. The goal is always to preserve as much of the original staircase as possible, provided the structure allows it. In this case, it was decided to re-cover the staircase and close and plaster the underside. Some projects allow for reusing the staircase stringer and attaching new treads, but due to the original lower cabinets and landing finish, this approach was not suitable here.

The original Utrecht-style spindles and balusters give the home a lot of character, and we are proud that this staircase has been brought back to life. This classic staircase shines again!
